![]() ![]() Kyle Katarn, hero of the previous Dark Forces!Jedi Knight adventures is no longer heading the cast list, having been forced to take a wage cut and pass on his dubious talents as a teacher at Luke Skywalker's School of Jedism on Yavin 4. Jedi Master ClassĪs mentioned last issue, some other major changes are obvious even before the adventure begins. The game eventually revealed itself to be probably the most enjoyable in the Star Wars lineage in terms of saber-wielding action, and it is with some relief, then, that the new game focuses even more strongly on the electrifying clash of saber on saber. And it was a pleasure, in spite of the formulaic running and gunning that had to be completed in the early stages, and the botched design of the game's more tedious puzzle solving sections. Indeed, having played the game extensively, we think it might be the best Jedi game yet.ĭespite the lack of numerical evidence in the title, Jedi Academy is the chronological sequel to last year's Jedi Outcast, one of the most frustrating action games I've had the pleasure to review. And despite the years, the old Qlll workhorse (now rivalling Jacko for number of facelifts) is still looking surprisingly capable. As we now know, he was of course discussing the merits of the venerable Quake III engine, which is being dusted off once more for Raven's second Star Wars outing, Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. If Jedi Outcast truly wanted to honor Jedi Knight and Mysteries of the Sith, it should have implemented a similar system of consequence because, as it stands, the game's attempt at honoring the prior games is half-baked and only serves to hold back the gameplay."When 900 years-old you reach, look as good you will not", so said a terminally ill Master Yoda. If players recklessly kill civilians and/or prioritize dark side powers, Kyle becomes a Sith, usurps Jeric, and becomes emperor of a new empire. Unlike Jedi Outcast, Jedi Knight contains two different endings. In Jedi Knight players can utterly destroy their enemies with the power of the dark side, but there are consequences. Jedi Outcast's story decisions appear even worse when considering the structure of its predecessor, Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. Its completely fine considering that the point of the game is to be a power fantasy, but it undermines the game's reasons for not giving player's the lightsaber at the start of the game. ![]() Kyle gets to go nuts, and it in no way affects his mental state. Players, as Kyle, brutalize the enemy, using dark side powers like lightning and Force choke with impunity. In Jedi Outcast, Kyle is supposed to be wrestling with the dark side and worried about going bad, but this is not reflected in the gameplay. The problem with this storyline, and its reasoning for withholding Kyle's lightsaber, is that it makes no sense given the gameplay of Jedi Knight 2 : Jedi Outcast. Kyle eventually embraces the Force again, and the lightsaber shenanigans begin, but its only after his dear friend Jan Ors is seemingly killed by a Sith. Players do not have a lightsaber at the start of Jedi Outcast because the game is continuing the story established in the prior games. In the game, Kyle briefly turns to the dark side only to be saved by Mara's compassion. Mysteries of the Sith follows Kyle's apprentice Mara Jade as she searches for Kyle after he goes missing. In Dark Forces, Kyle is just a gun-totting grunt, but in Dark Forces II he becomes a Jedi while pursuing the Dark Jedi Jeric. ![]() All the games concern Kyle Katarn, an imperial officer turned rebel mercenary. Prior to Jedi Knight 2 : Jedi Outcast, there were three games in the series: Dark Forces, Dark Forces II Jedi Knight, and Mysterious of the Sith, an expansion to the Dark Forces II. ![]()
